Leslie Maitland is an American journalist and a former award-winning reporter and national correspondent for The New York Times. And: She has a close connection with Freiburg. In her book “Crossing the Borders of Time” she recalls the story of her mother, born in 1923 in Freiburg as a child to Jewish parents. In 1938, the family flees to Alsace where Janine meets Roland. Both fall hopelessly in love with each other and promise each other eternal fidelity. However, Janine’s family is forced to emigrate to America. Years later, Janine’s daughter Leslie embarks on her search for Roland, her mother’s great love… A true story of war, exile and happiness reclaimed. Translated by Claus Schneggenburger of Freiburg, the book has now been published in German by the Freiburg publisher Herder (“Liebe ist stärker als die Zeit”).
