FGvW advises Freiburg-based green tech startup ionysis on financing round

Freiburg-based green tech startup ionysis GmbH has raised new equity capital in the mid-single-digit millions as part of a seed financing round. ionysis develops highly efficient, emission-free and sustainable core components for fuel cells. The startup company has attracted two strategic investors, represented by CMS Stuttgart, from the field of technical research and development. In addition to capital, the investors bring their industrial know-how and business development support to the young company.

The goal of ionysis is to promote sustainable mobility through highly efficient, emission-free core components for fuel cells. This includes the further development of membrane electrode assemblies (MEA) as an essential building block of electrochemical converters and storage systems, in which the content of perfluorinated substances - an environmentally harmful component - is significantly reduced.

ionysis was founded in December 2021 by a team of five founders from the Electrochemical Energy Systems research area of the Hahn-Schickard-Gesellschaft für angewandte Forschung with support from the University of Freiburg and our Startup Desk. In addition to Matthias Breitwieser (Managing Director and Chief Technology Officer), Florian Lombeck (Chief Scientist) and Severin Vierrath (Scientific Advisor) - active or former employees of Hahn-Schickard and the University of Freiburg - Andreas Büchler (Chief Operation Officer) and Lisa Langer (Chief Financial Officer) complete the founding team. Additional employees of the Hahn-Schickard company joined the company after the financing round was completed in September 2022.

During the spin-off and the financing round, ionysis was legally advised by our Startup Desk under the leadership of Raphael Klesen LL.M. (Corporate Finance) as well as Jan Henning Martens (Corporate, M&A) and Max Fahr (Labor Law).
