Friedrich Graf von Westphalen to speak at EU-China Legal Affairs Dialogue in Beijing

On 20 and 21 June 2016 the launching event of the EU-China Legal Affairs Dialogue (LAD), will take place in Beijing. Commissioner Jourová, EU Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality will open the event on 20th June together with her Chinese counterpart Minister Song Dahan, Director of the State Council Legislative Affairs Office.

The creation of an EU-China Legal Affairs Dialogue was officially confirmed at the EU-China Summit held in Brussels on 29th June 2015. The Legal Affairs Dialogue will complement the existing sectoral EU-China dialogues. It aims to enhance EU-China cooperation on a broad range of issues.

This high-level opening at political level will be complemented by three workshops, focusing on e-commerce. At the workshops, the Directorate General for Justice and Consumers of the European Commission will present the overall Commission priority on the Digital Single Market and then focus on its recent legislative proposals on digital contracts. These proposals will be of concrete interest for Chinese companies which will have to apply the contract law rules set out in the Directives when selling goods or digital content online to European consumers. The topic is also of interest to the Chinese because they are in the process of finalizing their own legislation on e-commerce and are actively soliciting international input to improve the quality of their own legislation. The LAD as it develops will allow a better understanding of our respective legal systems. It can ultimately benefit European companies operating in China, where transparency, predictability of laws and enforcement of judgments remain a concern.

We are pleased to inform you that our partner Friedrich Graf von Westphalen will give a presentation at this event. If you happen to be in Beijing in June, you are very welcome to participate in the event.
