Do German courts hear cases in English?

The answer is yes and no. By law the language in which court cases are heard in Germany is German. However, in practice many courts accept documents in the English language without translation. Furthermore, there are model projects in Germany introducing specific chambers for international commerce, e.g. at the Cologne High Court, where entire cases are heard in English. And there is further development ahead. Our managing partner Barbara Mayer has recently been interviewed by the publisher LexisNexis in this context. Read the interview here.
